The next week, my teacher asks the class to talk about our daily routine. "What is the main idea of your morning?" she asks.
I remember: every morning, I get up, wash my face at the sink, and eat breakfast from things in the refrigerator. The main idea is simple — my morning is about getting ready for the day.
My classmate remembers how we go to school together every day. We walk through the door, and our teacher opens the window for fresh air. The main idea of this part is going to school with a friend.
"What is the main idea of your school subjects?" my teacher asks next. Our first activity was a reading lesson, listening carefully because it is important, and writing new words in my notebook with a marker. My classmate remembers art — cutting shapes with scissors, using glue, coloring, and drawing for our project. The main idea here is learning different subjects and activities.
"What about recess and lunch?" Someone remembers running to the playground for a counting game. Someone else remembers sitting with classmates to eat lunch and talk about the story. The main idea of this part is having fun and being together.
"And what happens after school?" my teacher asks. I remember climbing the stairs, doing homework at my desk, and checking my schedule. My classmate says her schedule at home is different from her schedule at school, but homework is still important. The main idea is finishing your work at home.
Finally, we remember the evening: washing my face again, reading a book, and then it is time to go to bed. The main idea of the evening is getting ready for sleep.
My teacher smiles. "Great! Each part of your day has its own main idea, but they all fit together into one daily routine."
